6 WEEK COURSE MODULE

Learning to understand the visual language of drawing is vital to anyone on their journey to advancing their artistic expressions. This 5 week session is foundational to the development of the artist using classical tools for accuracy.
WATERCOLOR
4 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTORS: Jessica Henry Gray;
Daniel Hill Riedel

Students will learn basic color theory and color handling, use of complimentary colors and how to create beautiful Victorian Watercolors. This approach to watercolor is a time honored and proven method that gets results. 
LANDSCAPE/PLEIN AIR
6 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Student will work on painting a landscape from photos.  What to look for in painting from photos and what to avoid, and also how to correct problems. Four weeks will be spent Plein Air painting. No matter what your favored discipline or style of painting, learning to paint outdoors, with all the challenges and immediacy will render the artist more accomplished and make anyone a better studio painter. 
ANIMALS
2 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTORS: Jessica Henry Gray;
Susie Gordon, guest instructor

One week will be spent painting a horse from a photo. Anatomy, drawing and character will be discussed, as well as painting fur, hair, etc.  One week will be spent Plein Air painting from a live horse. This will be a video, where the students can better gain an under-standing of how to approach such a subject and can do this on their own from life wherever they live, with whatever animal, based on gained knowledge from the video example.
STILL LIFE
5 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Beginning with simple studies, students will approach setting up their own arrangements, working with materials, and approaching various painting techniques in a controlled environment. All of these lessons from still life painting are wonderful carry-over techniques and methods to any other discipline of painting.

Studying the Masters is an important step in anyones art education.  Students will work to re-create a master painting, thereby learning many things, among which “why and what the artist was thinking, and how they communicated those elements, what they did to convey the message through paint.”
PORTRAITURE

Painting the portrait is the #1 most requested art instruction lesson because of artists’ desire for human connection. After developing a solid foundation, students will be well practiced in drawing, color handling and painting techniques. In this course you will gain an understanding of how to capture the likeness, character and emotion of every subject you paint.

3 WEEK COURSE MODULE

The last 3 weeks of the year will be focused on creating the final painting.  Students will employ all the lessons gained from the entire year of study. Subject matter is entirely the decision of each student. This is an important step in applying your training. A year-end show will be set up on our web site. Certificates will be sent to all students who completed the year.

DRAWING
5 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTORS: Jessica Henry Gray;
Daniel Hill Riedel

Drawing from nature is an inexhaustible discipline—critical for each student at every stage of the artistic journey.  Year 2 of RAFA is designed to instruct the student to truly see, understand and use the finer points of drawing. The foundation was laid in the Year 1. In Year 2, students are taught the classical methods of drawing entirely from life. Jessica Henry is the instructor for the first 4 lessons.

Lessons 1 & 2 will focus on time spent outdoors with a simple paper, pencil and time to immerse yourself in the in-depth study of nature and all its intricacies. 

Lessons 3 & 4 focus on drawing the plaster cast; blocking in the form, mapping out the value patterns, and dealing with subtleties of transitions. 

Daniel Hill Riedel teaches Lesson 5, as he demonstrates pencil drawing the portrait. The artist who can draw well, possesses the key to all art!
TECHNICAL SKILLS
3 WEEK COURSE MODULE

Developing a solid understanding and proper use of technical means and skills is a critical part of every art student’s journey to becoming a well-rounded artist.  This module will be taught by Daniel Hill Riedel.

Lessons 1 – 3: 
– Advanced Perspective
– Composition
– Pen & Ink 

 All courses in this module are designed to take the student’s development into a deeper appreciation of artistic principle and techniques matters that cannot be overlooked. These are fundamental, foundational understandings and skills that each artist needs to utilize in all creative work. The goal is to be able to think, see and create using these principles. The more the artist practices these skills, the sooner they will become second nature. Like learning a language, in time you use  it…it becomes part of who you are and just do it.
WATERCOLOR
3 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Victorian Watercolor: 
Lessons 1 - 3 devotes three separate studies focusing on developing the student’s hand at classical watercolor techniques. It is important to develop the eye and mind in this delicate and often misunderstood medium. 

Lesson 1 will focus on a cottage from the country roads of rural England. 

Lesson 2 will demonstrate a common practice of the Victorian’s—close-up studies of flowers. 
And finally in...

Lesson 3, we will plein air with the watercolors, and combine what we studied in the first lessons of drawing from nature, and do some simple watercolor studies directly from nature to begin the process of nature journaling throughout the year.
STILL LIFE
5 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Only in the quiet stillness of life, can you truly hear the scintillating music of light and movement. This year Jessica Henry will highlight the poetry and vibrant beauty of the unbearable stillness of life. Students will hone their understanding of capturing the movement of light, atmosphere, brilliant color and sensitive brushwork. 

Lessons 1 – 5 will feature different aspects of still life painting by featuring a new arrangement in each of the videos. Exercises will be given to encourage students to develop their own projects and maintain their own working from life year-long agenda.
LANDSCAPE/PLEIN AIR
5 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Leaving the studios students breath in the fresh air in the greatest studio the artist can find––The great outdoors! 

Lessons 1 – 5, students will observe the video demonstration by Jessica Henry, and then head out with the week’s specific lesson plan. Studies will focus on capturing light, atmosphere, accurate values, natural colors, becoming more efficient in the field and economizing your brushwork vocabulary in your studies.

3 WEEK COURSE MODULE

Lessons 1 – 3: Three weeks of studying the figure will be broken up into two weeks of working from life, oil painting the modestly covered figure using the techniques that have been discussed throughout the year, by Jessica Henry.

Studying the portrait is foundational to any traditional art education. A wealth of knowledge is gained by the close observation of the face and the personality behind the likeness.

ANIMALS
2 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Two weeks will be devoted to the study of animals. Week one will be on painting the dog. With the emphasis on painting fur, expressive eyes and some anatomical discussion. Week two will be on painting birds, capturing the feeling of feathers and other aviary aspects. Every effort will be made in working from life. Sketches are made ahead of time, and then paintings captured in the studio. Possible guest artist for this session. Yet to be confirmed.
YEAR-END PAINTING
3 WEEK COURSE MODULE
INSTRUCTOR: Jessica Henry Gray

Marking the year’s completion will be the year-end final painting. This Course Module is a collective of everything we’ve learned all year long. Jessica Henry will feature an example of how to pull all this principles and elements together in one panting during a detailed demonstration in Lessons 1 – 3. 

Each student will make creative decisions to create a composition on their own and develop and complete a truly creative and personal painting marking the journey of their studies with the Renaissance Academy of Fine Arts.

Renaissance Academy of Fine Arts is an online art Instructional program. The full program is two (2) years. Each year is made up of eight (8) - nine (9) course modules. Each course module is comprised of multiple lessons. 

You will take 34+ individual lessons throughout the course of the year. Each lesson will range from 45 minutes - 3.0+ hours in length and will also include downloadable/printable workbooks for each class.

The entire program progressively builds the students' knowledge and practice of techniques in various disciplines. Each year becomes more advanced in its training. 

All classes will be initially taught in a live-streaming format. The recorded version of the lesson will be posted for viewing at your convenience. 

We understand that you have a busy life and may not be able to attend all of the classes live, so we're making it easy for you to view the video lessons and materials anytime at your convenience.

Once you enroll, you will be given a link to the RAFA Membership Area. You will create an account with your email and a password. You will then be able to access your lessons after they are posted at anytime and as often as you'd like.

It's also meant to develop a community of like-minded artists. We make weekly announcements that the lesson videos and workbooks are available on the RAFA Member Area account, when the lesson is live. Students can print out the workbooks and paint along during the video lesson. (Or later as their schedules permit). All the lessons will be available on the RAFA Members Area and not posted or shared on the Facebook page.
